The treatment of the wounded and ill frontline soldiers

During the years of the Great Patriotic about 190 thousand wounded and ill frontline soldiers were sent to the Krasnoyarsk region for treatment. Those days many organizations gave their buildings to the эвакуационным hospitals. By the autumn  1942 there were 46 hospitals operating in the region, about 20 of them were in Krasnoyarsk.

On the left bank of Krasnoyarsk they were situated on the following addresses:
The Officers House, Perenson st., 20,
Mira ave., 99, 86 and 83,
Karl Marx st., 124 (the building of the Krasnoyarsk Medical University),
Lenin st., 108, 114,
Kirov st., 11,
Uritskiy st.,Kirov st., 117,
Profsoyuzov st., 17
Volochaevskays st., 44,
Lomonosov st., 9.

On the right bank the hospitals were situated in Irkutskaya st., 2, Pesochnaya st., 20, Vavilov st., 21 and 37, and they were also in some buildings which do not already exist on the city map.

In the
эвакуационном hospital № 1515 in Lenin st.,114, where now school #10 is situated, the genius surge Valentin Feliksovich Voino-Yasenetskiy, known as  Saint Luka, worked with the most seriously ill patients. Being in the position of the exiled, he became the head doctor of the hospital and a consultant of all the hospitals on the territory of the region. Every day he held 3-4 very difficult operations on purulent wounds.

One day in one of the evacuation hospitals two old buses at once broke down. At night a train with the wounded frontline soldiers had to arrive, there was no time for repairing.

It was decided to put the hospital staff standing along the route from the station to the hospital in order to carry the wounded soldiers  on the stretchers one by one.  However nearly all Krasnoyarsk people came to the streets. The people were standing like an alive chain and carefully passed the wounded soldiers from hands to hands.

The Honoured Doctor Valentina Sukhodolskaya remembered later: “It seemed, that we were out of strength, but no one left the chain until the last wounded had been taken from the train carriage”.

The doctors used the newest medical achievements in their work: mud and paraffin treatment, plastic surgery, physiotherapy and etc. The medical staff made feats every day, working 12 and more hours. And during their free time the nurses and attendants knitted warm socks and mittens for the soldiers of the Red Army.

Plants and factories, cultural establishments, collective farms and state farms helped the hospitals in supplying, held cultural and mass events.

To entertain the wounded, concerts, excursions to Stolby, skiing walks, creative sections were organized. Every day the patients were visited by schoolchildren.

For the period of the war the military doctors of the Krasnoyarsk region helped 72,3% of the wounded and 90,6% of ill soldiers and officers to return to duty. 700 warriors died in the hospitals. To commemorate them, the people of Krasnoyarsk erected the monument near the city memorial in 1975.
