A route around Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs for 3 days

A route around Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs for 3 days

Are you a tourist and have you dreamt for a long time to get acquainted with the largest city on the Yenisey? Or are you a local resident who has got a short holiday? Or maybe, some of your friends are coming to you from the neighbouring region and you want to introduce the coolest places in Krasnoyarsk to them?  –  There can be lots of variants and we can offer you an interesting route to each of them. It will help you to get acquainted (or to learn better!) with the city and its suburbs, get a charge of great emotions and even bring your muscles into tone. Yes, you’ll pump your legs especially well! Take comfortable clothes and footwear for walking at nature with you, a camera and don’t forget about snacks and a thermos.  We promise, travelling along this route will become one of the brightest memories – it has been tested by our own experience :)

Day 1

So, we suggest devoting the first day to the walk in the central part of the city and observing the city’s beauties from the bird’s flight height. We choose Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel, which is situated on Karaulnaya Hill in the city centre as the start point of our route. If you’ve come to us from another part of Russia, you will find this place familiar to you anyway. This is because this sightseeing is depicted in the ten-ruble banknote and is rightly considered to be one of the symbols of Krasnoyarsk. From here you will see the major part of the city from the height and take great panoramic photos. You can read about the history of this place in details and about possible activities here.

Then we can go right down the hill to the Park named after G.V. Yudin. In this cozy place in the calm centre you can walk along the Family bridge, have a bite in a comfortable gazebo and catch the wind on one of the swings.

After that plunge into the city centre to the main Krasnoyarsk promenade – Mira avenue. If you go up and straight, you’ll find yourself approximately near the Revolution Square. From here turn left in the direction of Strelka district (the Vantovy bridge) – it’s easy to orient here – if the numbers of the buildings decrease, you are going right way :) Admire the wonderful ancient architecture, since the majority of buildings here remember the times of nobles and merchants. Read the signage on the facades – so you’ll learn more about what the numerous walls keep. And don’t forget to take photos in the especially interesting places for you.

So, you have reached Strelka or Mira Square. This is here where in 1628 Andrey Dubenskiy and Cossacks founded the Krasniy Yar fortress and already in 1690 it got the status of the city. At this place you can see the Vantoviy bridge, by the way, the first pedestrian one in Krasnoyarsk. Also you can see the monument to the commander Nikolay Rezanov, who is famous for his love story that became the base of the rock opera Junona and Avos. You can also put on skates here and test the ice at the atmospheric skating-rink, and then go straight through the Vantoviy bridge to study the island of Tatyshev, where in winter you can find lots of cool activities.

You might have walked enough in the very centre of the city, so we offer you to have some meal (we’d advise you visiting the steakhouse Svoi Rebyata right on the Central embankment with the view of the never frozen Yenisey) and go to conquer the longest stairs in Russia. But for the beginning let’s go to the Eastern Entrance of the national park Krasnoyarsk Stolby. Right from here an exciting view of the rocks of Takmak group is opened. You can admire the views either from the granite  quarry, or from different small observing grounds and even from the swings! Don’t forget to drink refreshing water as well.

In the beginning of the route you’ve seen the city from the height in its central part, and now it’s time to look at it from aside. So, let’s go up the stairs to Torgashinsky ridge. Not only do you go the longest stairs in Russia, including 1683 steps, you’ll be rewarded with perfect views of the rocks and forest of the national park Krasnoyarsk Stolby  for this. And what about the promised view of the city? We’ll share a small secret with you – it’s not worth stopping at the top of the stairs –go further along Torgashinskiy ridge! Go up to the right (if you stand if your back towards the stairs) along two flights of stairs and admire the lights of the evening city.  To say that it’s breathtaking is to say nothing! Go back to the start of the stairs. You’ll go back already after twilight, so you’ll be able to see the stairs in bright lights :)

Day 2

Perhaps, this is the richest in emotions and steps day. The first point of our long traveler’s day will be the observing ground Tsar Fish on the Sliznevo cliff. Here you will find the wrought-iron monument to such a proud fish as sturgeon and endlessly wonderful views of the outgoing Yenisey, mighty chains of rocks on the opposite bank and endless taiga. The views are indeed breathtaking, and there are often eagles flying above your head in search of py. But there is a question – why has the sturgeon got to 300-meteres high sheer rock? The thing is that just in 5-minutes drive a small village Ovsyanka – the homeland of the writer Viktor Astafiev, the author of the novel “Tsar Fish”, is situated. Let’s enjoy the views and go to our next location on the picturesque serpentine – to the embankment of Divnogorsk.

If you are a tourist, from the very entrance to this town of amazing mountains you will be enchanted with the opening picture of the place. And if you have already been to these places, you’ll be astonished anyway as if it’s your first time here!  So, we are at the embankment of Divnogorsk, and there is what to look here at (not for nothing in 2019 the urbanist and blogger Ilya Varlamov called this place one of the most beautiful spaces in Russia!). Here we are making a promenade along the Yenisey and stop periodically to make a photo against the backdrop of what is pleasant to your eyes. You might have already gained some appetite at this stage, so let’s urgently go to one of the local coffee shops to drink tasty cocoa or coffee.  You can choose a dessert or even a pizza, pancakes or something else to make your bite more nutritive. If the weather allows, let’s sit at one of the street grounds at the embankment – no words are necessary – you’ll understand everything yourself! But be attentive, local sparrows – are stubborn and sometimes hungry guys.

After having rest at the embankment let’s drive to the Krasnoyarsk HPES. Already on the bridge the view of this giant is opened, so we can already start admiring the genius of engineering. But we don’t stop here and keep on going to the observing ground to see the station as close as possible.  So, were going to the coordinates 55.938432° 92.287388°. On the way you will most likely rest against the barrier, so let’s leave the transport here and go up on foot. Here the hydro-power electric station will appear in all its details – gateways, boatlifts and what not. By the way, this is exactly here, where the Krasnoyarsk sea starts, and unlike the Yenisey, it freezes!

Then our route leads to one of the greatest observing grounds in the city – the Beautiful  Bank, that is spad in the district of Academgorodok. And here we do not exaggerate at all, the place is really wonderful and… the Beautiful Bank is its official name! The magnificent view of the right bank with the national park Krasnoyarsk Stolby,  Torgashinskiy ridge, the highest point of the city – the extinct volcano Chernaya Sopka  and many others – the eyes can hardly catch the fragments of this really amazing Siberian city on the Yenisey banks. But the bank is steep, so you’d better maximally attentive and don’t come close to the cliff. It’s better to enjoy the expanses at the save distance from the edge of the cliff.

Let’s move further, and our eyes are drawn to a small church – this is the church of New Martyrs and confessors of Russia and close to it there is a 5-meters high statue of Jesus Christ. Here you can especially feel piece and calm of your soul. Let’s stand here for a couple of minutes and remember this magic adventure in Krasnoyarsk and… go to a new point of our route.

Move to the very depth of the Gremyachaya Griva eco-park and get to the third  visit centre, called Serebryaniy Log. Here we can get charged with energy near the Serebryaniy pond – we can walk, sit on the decent to the frozen pond or relax on the comfortable sunbeds – yes, it’s not forbidden to do it in winter! Then we go to get acquainted with the dwellings of the peoples of Yenisey Siberia - a chum and a yurt. By the way, if you want not just look at them, but to learn some interesting facts about their erecting and many other things, listen to the audio guide here.  And it’s already time to have a bite – inside the visit centre you can find the tastiest aroma cedar Raf-coffee or taiga tea (it’s maximum Siberian style!) and pancakes with different fillings.

And let’s finish our long traveler’s day at the observing ground at Nikolaevskaya Sopka, where the highest flagpole with our country’s symbol is situated. Just imagine what views you are going to see at the altitude of 505 meters! From this top a picturesque panorama of the whole city, the outlines of Takmak and Yermak rocks, the Yenisey river and the Bobrovy Log Funpark are opened.  And, of course, there is a waving flag behind us, that cannot but enchants. We’ll sit a bit in the amphitheater, look at the shining city lights and see the day off at the city’s highest observing ground.

Day 3

In the conclusion of the trip around Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs first of all let’s plunge into culture and history, visiting the museum ship “Saint Nikolas”. This is the steamboat which took Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (Ulyanov then) to his exile to Shushenskoye. Also, Tsesarevich Nikolay Alexandrovich Romanov, the future last Emperor of Russia stayed on it. Of course, these people were here at different time :) On board we will learn the history of shipping on the Yenisey, look at the reconstructed cabins of famous people who had been here, ring the ship’s bell called rynda, see the machinery of the ship and study the exposition devoted to the commander Nikolay Rezanov.

As the second point of the trip we suggest going to the national park Krasnoyarsk Stolby using the cable road in the Bobrovy Log Funpark. Yes, we can say for sure that this is the pearl of the city which everyone knows about and visits on the first day of the trip. But we’ve decide to propose it for dessert to make the final of your travelling as bright and memorable as possible (but how is it possible to choose the best among all these pearl?!). So, we’ve come to the cable road. What are we going to do further? – of course, let’s go up to the top, observing the appearing city views on our way, then we’ll go to the observing ground and admire the main rocks – Takmak, Chinese Wall and many other. But here our route is not finished – let’s go further along the path to the Stolby observing point.  Walking on foot will take you 40 minutes. We are sure you will like the way itself and its final as well. Here, if there is such an opportunity (we mean that you are wearing the appropriate non-slipping boots which allow you to climb the rocks safely), let’s climb the rocks and have a small picnic with an amazing view, and don’t forget to take wonderful photos, and then go back.

We are sure, the spent days have become a cool active adventure for you, so it’s high time to calm down and make a summary of the Krasnoyarsk adventure by watching some new movie. Let’s go to the Cinema Park at the left bank embankment and let our legs relax after three days of active walking in the mountains and forests :) After the film we are going to the embankment, and it’s already dark here, cozy yellow lights are turned on, the Yenisey is wrapped in mist in the frost, and light shiver runs our bodies because of the low temperatures on the thermometer.  Let ‘s walk a bit to remember everything that has happened to us for these three days – this is one more great adventure to your life collection, and how great it is that all this has happened to you in Krasnoyarsk :)

P.s.: Note, this route can be good for travelling in any season, but it’s necessary to correct the route in winter according to the weather conditions :)

Thanks for testing this three days route to our brave and tough friends Olya Orekhova and Sasha Kaplin.
