7 reasons to visit Norilsk

The most - this is the most suitable word for northern Norilsk. The snowiest and northernmost city with the population of over 180 thousand people. The deepest mines and the biggest plants of the largest nickel and palladium producers are located here. The northernmost theatre in the world, the northernmost university in the country, the very first and the only mining farm in Arctic are situated in Norilsk! From Norilsk you can also go to a trip to the most-most waterfalls: the most powerful one in Russia – Bolshoy Kureisky, the widest one – Oransky and the highest one in Eurasia – Talnikovy. But not only the very things attract travellers from all over the world  to this northern city. So, we are ready to reveal you 7 reasons, why you would like to buy a ticket to Norilsk immediately :)

► To see the real Northern Lights. There are not so many places on our planet, which can show us all the diversity of colours of the Northern Lights. One of these rare corners is Norilsk. The local residents know that usually you can see this event in the period between spring and autumn equinox – from September 21 to March 21. So, welcome!

► To feel like a real coal miner, having gone 60 meters underground, wearing full professional uniform and equippment. Together with Taimyr Explorers Club everyone can get to the  operating production – the Angidrit colliery of Kayerkansky mine. Here you can get acquainted with the  production process, and feel like a real coal miner!

► To make photos of the fascinating industrial landscapes. Numerous enterprises, facades of the abandoned and half-ruined buildings, pipes at the backdrop of the rising sun and mighty buildings in the Empire style – this is a real find for a photographer!

► To touch the history. Over 20 years on the territory of Taimyr there existed one of the largest corrective labour camp of GULAG – Norillag (from 1939 to 1956 about 16 thousand people died there). These were its prisoners who built the first houses and plants of the city. Now at this place the museum complex Norilsk Golgotha has been placed as a tribute to the victims of political repssions.

► To feel on your own what a polar and a polar night is. In winter during 45 days the duration of a light day is not over 4 hours. And from the 19th to 25th of July a polar day starts – during this time the sun doesn’t go beyond the horizon, and in the street of the city you can often see people having night walks.

To taste the North. Yukola and sugudai, stroganina and arctic coffee, and ice-cream with reindeer meat and cloudberry jam for dessert. Reindeer meat, fresh fish and incredibly tasty northern berries will certainly astonish any tourist.

► To overcome arctic оff-road. To make a small quad bike or jeep trip, and become a pioneer in the pristine nature corners of these northern lands.
