Krasnoyarsk Region – a reliable rear of the country

During the years of the Great Patriotic War the Krasnoyarsk region became a reliable  base of our country — it sent people, military technic, ammunition, food provision to the front, treated the injured and won victories in the battles.

Almost 455 thousand residents of the region were at the front. This is a quarter of its population at that time. 68 thousand of them didn’t come home. In 1994, when the mobilization reserves of  the region’s manhood  were almost exhausted, 836 girls and women were called up to the front from the Krasnoyarsk region.

These were the years of the war, when Krasnoyarsk had got the industrial base, which turned it into one of the industrial centres of Russia later.  The colossal evacuation of the industrial enterprises, which followed the capture of the country’s most developed regions by the enemy, has no analogues in history. The equipment of 25 large plants and factories and 30 thousand workers with them arrived only at Krasnoyarsk.

The major burden fell upon women, aged people and teenagers. During the war years over 200 million rubles were donated to the fund of defense from the residents’ private savings as well as several hundred thousands of poods of bread and other products, 115 thousand items of warm clothes. Presents to the soldiers were sent even by schoolchildren and even children from kindergartens.  

Despite all the tragedy, the War speeded up the development of the Krasnoyarsk region, turned it from a weakly developed region into an industrial giant! Krasnoyarsk people had to put all their efforts, and many of them – even lives, to realize this task.

In the picture a 22-years old Krasnoyarsk Komsomol member Kristina Shumova is passing the personal fighter aircraft to the commander of the air regiment lieutenant colonel Nikolay Sobolev. She donated 121 thousand rubles for the construction of the combat aircraft. This money was life savings of the collective farmers - the Shumkovs family,  from Lopatino village of Berezovskiy district. To collect the necessary sum of money, they had to sell their cow and potato harvest.
